4th Graders celebrated the International Day of Peace

TOWN HALL ART DISPLAY
The Smithsonian is coming to Town Hall and setting up a “Journey Stories” exhibition.  To go along with this, fourth graders created a piece of artwork about community.  They learned about the style of Micrography which is creating an image using only text.  The students created images such as a cruiser, horseshoe, house, and more using only words about Groveport and what community means to them.  They turned out great and some of them will be on display at Town Hall during the “Journey Stories” exhibition.  The show will run from June 26th – July 31st.

 Mehndi
Fourth Grade has been learning about Asian and Indian art throughout the year.  For this project we discussed the art of Mehndi which is an Indian art form where designs and patterns are painted on the hands and feet of Indian women.  Mehndi is also known as henna painting; which is body painting.  This art form is most common in India, North Africa and the Middle East.  The students learned about this tradition and created their own Mehndi designs.  Because Mehndi is most commonly seen on the hands, the students created a ceramic bowl shaped like their hands.
After creating our bowls we then created a drawing of Mehndi designs which we placed our bowls on.  Don't these look fantastic?

Chinese Dragons

Continuing our study of Asian art, we created a colorful Chinese dragon. Students love these magical, mythical, colorful, graceful beasts. The dragon is integral to Chinese culture. In fact, the Chinese call themselves “descendents of the dragon.”  Worshipped for centuries, dragons are infused in the art, architecture, literature, and festivals of China. There are many types of dragons with differing jobs or roles. Generally, they are known for their control of nature through weather. It is the dragons that provide wind and rain and make the rivers and lakes rise and fall, thus affecting the growth of crops.  Symbols of good fortune, Chinese dragons are benevolent, wise, intelligent, powerful, noble, and determined. We begin our lesson by looking at many depictions of Chinese dragons—paintings, drawings, embroideries, mosaics, and sculptures.  We discuss the dragon’s characteristics and cultural importance

Hybrids

Fourth graders pushed their creativity to create their own mixed-up animal.  We learned about hybrids and what characteristics would make a realistic animal.  Students colored their animals with oil pastels and then painted their background with watercolor.  We learned how the oil pastel resists watercolor.  Once our animal was finished, the students had to come up with the new name of their animal.  We had a lot of fun with this project.  Nice job 4th graders!

Volcanos
Fourth grade learned about volcanos in science class and their teacher asked if we could make a volcano in art.  The students worked in groups to build a paper Mache volcano that they later erupted in science.  They had a blast doing this.  Thank you Flyers Pizza for donating all of the boxes.

Asian Scrolls

With this activity students were introduced to images of historical Asian mountain paintings and the use of atmospheric perspective. Students used a water color wash on half sheets of paper, applying more paint at the bottom of the painting and using water to lighten the paint towards the top. The next step was to create a mountain range using various values of paint to establish a sense of depth in the picture.

My “Profile”

Fourth Graders created a self-portrait and filled their portrait with thirty things they like.  These symbols could be sports, food, school subjects, books, animals and etcetera.  While drawing these symbols the students focused on overlapping, drawing large and drawing off the page.  This project was a great way to get to know each other!
